I went to Fairview elementary 1967-1973  and our family lived on Malvern Avenue. My Dad was Thomas James Henderson Jr. and he was a Fairview high school graduate,  I am thinking class of 1947.  I remember the old Fairview high school and driving past it many times in the neighborhood.  Thank you for all of this wonderful information. It was great to visit here. Blessings to you all.

What a wonderful time we had at the 50th class reunion this past September. The organization of the events were fantastic. Thank you to all involved with that. A lot of photos were taken and I know that Jeri Jones Bland is working very hard adding them to our website. I really enjoyed my time visiting with you all. I'm looking forward to our next get together. All best to my class of 1966 school mates.

I attended Cornell Heights Elementary from 1963 to 1971 and would have been in the Fairview Class of 1976, although I graduated from Northmont. My father was Fairview Class of 1927 when the school was still housed in "The Tower."  In the late 1980s, I was working at the Englewood Independent newspaper, where I often crossed paths with Bulldogs, including Harold Haas, whom I believe was class of 1920. Mr. Haas was a young boy during the 1913 flood and went with a neighbor who had a canoe to help rescue people. This was much to the chagrin of his parents as he did not tell them what he was going to do. They worried all day! He also had a great Don Longenecker story. The other thing is that Fairview may have been home to Baseball Hall of Famer Jesse Haines, although I haven't been able to find the information needed to confirm this. I interviewed his daughter who said that her father, who lived in Phillpsburg, may have gone to high school at Fairview due to no high schools open in his vicinity in about 1907-1911. He did not graduate from high school. However, that would make both Montgomery County Hall of Famers (he and Mike Schmitt) Fairview attendees.

I didn't go to FHS but grew up in Dayton until we moved to Texas in 1973 when I was 13.  My mother sent me the link to your site to look at the Dayton Memories but I have to admit I've been looking through all your sections for over an hour so far. What a great website with tons of history... very interesting and so well done.  Great job!

Navigating the google maps, I tried to show my 8 year old son the school I spent the best six months of my life as an exchange student for over 30 years. I felt a strange pain of knowing that FHS was not there. Its like losing part of my story. Hope the change is for the better. Let's keep the good memories!

Was cruising through the web at random and somehow wound up here. Huge surprise! I went to Fairview Elementary, graduated in 1961, and recognize some of the little nippers in those old class photos, although I don't show up in any of them (but I still have all my own class pics). I recognize some of the names I saw -- Dan Wolfe and I were in the same Cub Scout den. Unfortunately, I never went to Fairview High as I lived on the wrong side of Catalpa Drive and wound up at Colonel White (boo, hiss).

At any rate I'm just shouting out a huge hello to anyone who dates from this time and have as fond a memory of Fairview as I do.

Fellow Fairview Grads,
Wanted to let you know of the passing of Fairview Basketball Coach Don Barger at age 85.
Do you rember how he used to sit on the bench with a program rolled up and rocking back and forth during close games?
Who will ever forget the team's great Regional Run in 1964...eventually losing to by a mere 8 points State Champs Belmont, featuring college all-americans and NBA players Don May and Bill Hosket.

This site brings back many memories. I left Dayton in 1971 to join the Air Force after college. I find it hard to believe that the school will soon be gone. No matter where life may take me, I will always remember those I went to school with at Fairview High. As I look back, i realize that we were all family. There was no freshman to seniors. I communicated with everyone and I count you all as family.

Just recieved this site and was glad and sad to see the demise of the beautiful old building. I left Dayton in 1961 and on visits back, my heart ached to see the city I loved change so drastically. Too bad for our history. Nice seeing names I remember. Please Ohioans, keep some of the good historical sites.

As I will be out of the country the week of July 23-30, I am deeply disappointed that I won't be able to "crash" the Fairview '66 reunion.  I really looked forward to reuniting with some of my former classmates, fellow Boy Scouts and neighbors, especially since I was one of the few of you who went to Colonel White after we left Cornell Heights in 1962. I want to extend my best wishes to all, and please don't hesitate to contact me in the future.

Thanks so much for organizing this site.  I viewed all the areas and it was so much fun to see faces and names I have not heard of or seen in years. I actually have kept in contact with friends from '68 and '69 classes. I lived in the bay area of California for many years. Our family moved to Charlotte, NC about 10 years ago.  I have talked to Karen (Rodberg) Moore who lives in Charlotte.  I am a high school nurse (a job I LOVE) and in the town where Connie (Bouts) Tobias lives.  We have talked years ago but have never been able to get together. I have so many wonderful memories of high school and the youth group @ Grace United Methodist Church.  The youth group was loaded with kids from FHS and CWHS. Hopefully I will be able to make it to the reunion in 2013. Our last reunion fell @ the same time we were heading to Hawaii for 2 weeks. Jeri, thanks for being so instrumental in putting this all together and for any others that have assisted !!   PS:  Where did the bulldog end up ??

Dear Mary Ellen,
Exciting to hear that you are concerned about the FHS stained glass windows. If you are talking about how the entire class of 1956 can help, the first way would be to spread the word about the '66 website address (www.fairview66.org) and the Windows Page information on the site. Secondly, if you have connections to your class representative who has your class contact list, the windows committee could send out  information to your classmates if we had a copy of that list or we can give you specific information to send to your class. We can use all the help we can get. You may contact me directly at wishingstar@columbus.rr.com.  Donations may be made from the windows donation page on the '66 website.  I appreciate your concerns about the windows. Thank you for writing! Jeri Jones Bland, FHS '66

Hello graduates of Fairview High School.  I'm with the Class of '65.  Even though I didn't graduate with the class of '65, I grew up with all who were a part of the years from '61-65.  In fact, some classmates date back to grade school, Fairview Elem.

The "Steiner" family dates back to the late 50's and 60's.   My brothers, Fred, '61 and Doug, '69 (I think) played football, basketball and baseball for many years.  My sister, Connie, '59, was a cheerleader for 3 years and was always part of the Maypole dancing group.  She was also a member of the Ace High club!  I played the saxophone in the concert and marching band and attended band camp for 3 years.  Remember Mr. Griep, our band leader?  He led our Scotchettes, Majorettes, drill team and band to many years of marching formations during half-time of football games at "Welcome Stadium".  One year, we were invited to Cleveland, to strut our stuff during half-time at one of the Cleveland Browns game! What an honor!  (I forget who the opposing team was?) Good times!!

I'll have to write more about Fairview and all that happened throughout the years another time.  But this brings back many memories.

Thank you!

You have an impressive website and it was fun to read about the "upper classpeople" with whom I was so impressed in my HS days. Our class of 1968 has had a reunion every 5 years since our 20th and we maintain communication with many of our classmates. Some of us here in Dayton still see each other frequently. Will check this site our periodically , as well as the site of '68, to see what's going on.

For all my classmates, you all have done a great job in capturing the spirit and the energy of the Class of 66.  I've been away from Dayton since 1981 when I moved our family to Scottsdale, AZ, then on to Denver, CO in 1993.  I have been back a few times to visit remaining family, but have never taken the initiative to make contact with any of the class.  Sounds odd for the one voted "Boy with the best school spirit '66".  But life is so full of twists and turns.  The latest being the discovery of this site.  I'm hoping to re-kindle some of the friendships from long ago.  Thanks you all on the committee for making this possible.

What can I say?  Words cannot express the emotions I am feeling especially when I saw pictures of Mr. Bruggeman, my Beginning French and Etymology teacher.  The students in the class of 1966 might have been some of his first students but I was one of his last at Fairview.  Oh, the memories of trying french dishes prepared by fellow students and learning the Greek alphabet.  Don't ask me to recite them now!!

The pictures of the 11/11/2009 Field Trip brought so much joy and sorrow to me since our school is slated for the wrecking ball later this year.  I wish I could have been there.

There is only one thing to say: "Add a webpage with links to other Fairview alumni sites, i.e., Facebook's Fairview listing, etc. and a page for alumni and staff that are no longer with us".

Other than that, my heartfelt thanks for letting me  relive some of my fondest memories of the greatest high school in Dayton.

Jeri:

I have just finished catching up on all the additions that have been made to the site and it's content.  Boy, my hat is off to you folks who have transformed the Fairview66 site from a vision to what it is today: a wonderful link to our common past.  Please also pass along my thanks to Dan Wolfe for his great story of a visit with Mr. Bruggeman, a teacher who made a difference to him.

I marvel at the talent, creativity and dedication that continues to pour forth from our classmates.  It was an honor to attend FHS with you all and I'll bet Nancy Marker would be as proud of you as I am.

Marlene, thanks so much for your kind words. The committee really apreciates it! It has been fun working on the site. It is wonderful to hear from you and hope we can get more classmates to make an entry on this page. Having many entries would be an interesting addition for other classmates. It's a great way to keep in touch with everyone. Again, so good to hear from you and thanks for writng an entry!

Come on classmates — let's hear from you!  As Marlene said, we may be 61 but we are the "new"  41. So let's show it. Go Bulldogs!!

Thanks to Mike Levitt - I just heard about the new website. It is really terrific. Thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this such a user friendly site. I look forward to checking in often to learn what people are up to.  It is hard to believe that we are now 61 - but I guess since 60 is the new 40 - we are really only 41!!!

Hello Classmates!
I am taking advantage of this space to thank you for joining your other classmates in viewing our new class website.  It's so good to see you participating and registering on the "Class of 66" page.  The registrations on that page will form our master contact list for upcoming reunions and other notifications, so it is important to register.  We appreciate all of your comments so please keep them coming!!  We have gotten some good suggestions for the site.  Looking forward to hearing more from you!
