HELP US DISCOVER MORE ABOUT OUR FHS HISTORY
Do you know anything about this mural? It was featured in the Class of 1957 yearbook with no information as to its origin or location. Across the top banner on the mural are painted the words, "Education Is The Foundation For Progress." Other than that, we know nothing about it. No one we have contacted remembers where the mural was located nor any of its history. We can only guess that the mural must have been removed and perhaps destroyed during a renovation or addition of Fairview High School after 1957. This is an artifact we would like to know about. Anyone with information please contact us at FairviewLegacyProject@yahoo.com. Or you may use the "Contact Us" option on the side menu bar of this website. Please share your memories with us.
WHERE ARE FAIRVIEW'S ARTIFACTS LOCATED?
Since the demolition of Fairview High School in 2011, alumni have been asking about the cornerstone Time Capsule, Rookwood Fountains, 3rd & Main Banner, Koepnick reliefs and the class composite photos.
In the weeks ahead we will try to answer many of your questions.
We knew some items were initially taken to the old Carlson Elementary School. That school had been used by the Dayton Public Schools as a storage facility. Bob Mousaian, Class of 1962, and Al Donaldson, Class of 1965, were given permission to remove the bronze plaques and the 3rd & Main Banner. Those items were then taken to Carlson for storage.
Bob and Al were also given consent to remove two of the Fairview Rookwood Fountains, the decorative wall curio trophy case in the foyer and the interior wood and glass entry doorway by the main office.
We have been aware for sometime that the two Metcalf stained glass windows, our Bulldog Mascot and the Four Freedom Plaques that had hung above the library doors are now displayed at the new Fairview PreK-8 School. It is located at the corner of Hillcrest and Elsmere.
We do not have any information regarding the location of the 1930 athletic field iron gates. They disappeared from view sometime before or during the demo process. The brick side support columns are still standing as of January 2013. If anyone has information to share about the gates or any other Fairview artifacts, contact us at FairviewLegacyProject@yahoo.com. Send tips on where more Fairview artifacts might be located. Please share photos in the form of jpegs of any artifacts or memorabilia you may have. Let us know if you would like the artifacts in DPS storage to be preserved. Where and how would you like them preserved? Tell us your concerns.
When the Carlson facility was demolished in 2012, we became concerned and started to investigate what had happened to the Fairview artifacts once stored there. Initially, we could not get answers. After numerous phone calls and emails, we found some of the answers alumni have been anticipating.
Dan Wolfe, Class of 1965, was given permission to view the current storage facility, DPS Service Building, located on James McGee off Gettysburg. Dan and Bob Mousaian toured the facility on January 17, 2013 and found many of the artifacts in question are now housed in that building. They were able to photographically document some of the available items. On February 28, 2013 Dan returned with Dennis Huddleston, Class of 1965, to document more of Fairview's artifacts.
Three of the six Koepnick stone reliefs from the outer wall of the auditorium survived demolition and are now stored at the DPS Service Building along with class composite photos and other artifacts we will be showing you.
We have recently learned that Ruetschle Architects has been named to design a Northwest Branch of the Dayton Metro Library on the Fairview High School site. (see Dayton Daily News online article 7/18/13) A dialogue is being established to see if certain artifacts from our school can be integrated into this new building.
We will place as many photos of the FHS artifacts on this page as possible. More will be added as time allows along with any new information we obtain. Please keep checking back.
